Shing-Tung Yau Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance Established, Advancing Development of Mathematics-Specialized Models

The alliance was established at Tsinghua University and plans to join forces with mathematics research institutions to build specialized models and research infrastructure, advancing the two-way integration of mathematics and artificial intelligence.

On October 11, the Shing-Tung Yau Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Alliance was established at Tsinghua University. According to The Beijing News, the alliance is led by Shing-Tung Yau and formed jointly with eight mathematics research institutions, aiming to use artificial intelligence to assist mathematics and interdisciplinary research while also using mathematical theory to drive AI development.[1]

The alliance's work plan includes developing specialized models for mathematical science, building research infrastructure, conducting research on AI interpretability and safety, and advancing interdisciplinary applications, international talent cooperation, and the building of academic journals. The first laboratory is located at Tsinghua University's Qiuzhen College, established jointly with the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center; other participating institutions plan to establish related laboratories in succession.[1]

On-site reporting by Beijing Daily showed that member institutions presented a number of research results and directions in AI-assisted mathematics. In some studies, AI takes on tasks such as exploring proof approaches and assisting with computation, while mathematicians are responsible for argumentation and verification of results.[2]

The establishment of the alliance has set up a cooperation framework; the development of specialized models and the subsequent laboratory layout remain plans in progress. Continued observation of this direction should focus on whether the models help researchers solve specific problems, and whether results can be rigorously verified.

The alliance will also organize decision-making on major research directions and academic evaluation through an academic committee, chaired by Shing-Tung Yau, with academic leaders designated by participating institutions serving as members. According to the report, the cooperation mechanism involves the sharing of model training resources, formalized mathematics libraries, and computing power platforms, with the aim of enabling participating institutions to jointly use research tools and infrastructure.[1]

This organizational approach places model development, mathematics research, and evaluation of results within the same cooperation framework. For mathematics-specialized models, being able to generate derivations is only one part of the research process; the premises, computations, and logic in a proof still need to be verified step by step. In the research cases described by Beijing Daily, computer algebra systems are used to check identities and interval bounds and to generate reproducible computation certificates, while AI helps researchers explore strategies and simplify computations.[2]

It can be seen from this that the alliance focuses not only on model capabilities, but also on how research materials are reproduced, how academic contributions are evaluated, and how mathematicians can effectively use these tools.
